Netflix has announced that it has finally wrapped production on the upcoming second season of its fantasy series The Witcher. Based on the novels by Polish author Andrzej Sapkowski, the next season is slated to debut on the platform later this year.
The Witcher was one of Netflix’s bigger hits when it debuted its first eight-episode season back in December 2019. It follows Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill), a Witcher with special abilities who tracks down and kills monsters. The first season was based on Sapkowski’s books The Last Wish and Sword of Destiny, and even before Season 1 hit, we knew that he’d be coming back for a second season, and that it would bring in a bunch of new characters.
However, with the Coronavirus pandemic hitting the world and Hollywood productions hard in 2020, The Witcher was one of those projects that was shut down for months. It resumed production in August, only to be halted again after several crew members tested positive for the virus. It resumed a couple of weeks later, and after Cavill was injured on set.

With production on the season now complete, Netflix put together a short video featuring their producers celebrating the wrap and highlighting some of the challenges that they faced: a 158-day shoot, sometimes with three separate units, across 15 different locations. All with stringent COVID precautions for all of their 1,200 crew members and 89 cast members. It’s quite a feat.
Now, we’ll just have to wait for the next episodes to debut on the platform.
