The extremely popular Netflix series (and Bram Stoker Award finalist) Squid Game is officially coming back for a second season. The news isn’t unexpected: The show, which centers around a group of down-on-their-luck contestants who play a series of children’s games to the literal death in an attempt to win a major cash price, was watched by millions around the world.
What we didn’t have details on, however, was who will be coming back for season two… until now.
“It took 12 years to bring the first season of Squid Game to life last year. But it took 12 days for Squid Game to become the most popular Netflix series ever,” writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk said in a statement Netflix shared on social media along with the news of season two.
Before we get into who will be coming back, here’s an official synopsis of the first season:
A mysterious invitation to join the game is sent to people at risk who are in dire need of money. 456 participants from all walks of life are locked into a secret location where they play games in order to win 45.6 billion won. Every game is a Korean traditional children’s game such as Red Light, Green Light, but the consequence of losing is death. Who will be the winner, and what is the purpose behind this game?
It’s not a major spoiler to say that the game did indeed include lots and lots of death to support its overarching commentary that capitalism, in a word, sucks.
Some characters did survive, however, and Hwang has confirmed that the last man standing, Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae), and the notorious Front Man (Lee Byung-hun), will be back for season two.
He also teased that “the man in the suit with ddakji might be back,” a character we saw in the show’s first episode who introduces Gi-hun to the entire murderous endeavor. In addition to these returning characters, Hwang ends his statement by teasing that we’ll also meet Young-hee’s boyfriend, Cheol-su. Who’s Young-hee? That’s the murderous robot we see in the teaser video who guns down a couple dozen contestants during the “Red Light, Green Light” game.
No news yet on when the second season of Squid Game will make its way to Netflix. The entire first season, however, is now available to watch on the streaming platform.
