As far as potential plots for a Dungeons & Dragons movie go, the one on evidence in this trailer—”Whoopsie, I unleashed a massive evil, my bad!”—seems pretty promising. Legions of undead? Chonky dragons? Hugh Grant in perfect slimy-guy mode? Michelle Rodriguez kicking ass? Check, check, check, and check.
All the same, this new trailer for Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves still falls a little flat, and I want to blame the Led Zep song, which doesn’t add anything to the attempts at humor. But I’ve still got my hopes up that the actual movie lands the punchlines. Chris Pine is clearly enjoying himself as a bard with a tragic backstory (or so it seems); Rodriguez is a barbarian; Bridgerton‘s Regé-Jean Page is the no-fun paladin who gets to explain things; Justice Smith and Sophia Lillis make up the rest of the party. Hugh Grant’s character is a rogue named Forge Fitzwilliam, which might alone be worth the price of admission.
Honor Among Thieves is directed by John Francis Daley (who you might recognize from Bones) and Jonathan Goldstein, who also directed Game Night together. Both are also credited on the screenplay, along with Michael Gilio, and Chris McKay (The Tomorrow War) has a story credit.
We’ll see how it all plays out when Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves arrives in theaters on March 31st.
