Falling asleep on the job might generally come with consequences, but they aren’t usually quite as harsh as what happens when a new security guard at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza conks out. He had only one instruction: Keep your eyes on the monitors.
Hard to do that when you’ve faceplanted on your desk. And even harder when the animatronic bears come to life.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is the long-awaited adaptation of the video game of the same name, in which the protagonist must survive the murderous animatronic creatures of the titular pizza parlor. Animatronic creatures that are possessed by the spirits of murdered children, no less. The trailer for this film spells all this out eventually, but Mike (Josh Hutcherson) clearly has no idea what he’s signed up for when he shows up at work with his daughter in tow. The pizza parlor is closed, sure, but some parts of it are certainly still ready for business, if by “business” you mean “murders.”
The game series was created by Scott Cawthon, a co-writer on the film along with Seth Cuddeback and director Emma Tammi. The movie co-stars Elizabeth Lail (You), Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling, Mary Stuart Masterson, and Scream creeper Matthew Lillard, who never looks like he ought to be trusted. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop is responsible for the murderbears.
Five Nights at Freddy’s is in theaters and on Peacock starting October 27th.
