This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.

The band’s back together, and they’re even cuter than ever. Netflix has released a first teaser for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off, the anime adaptation of Bryan Lee O’Malley’s Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, which includes the entire cast of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, Edgar Wright’s adaptation of said graphic novels.

It’s adorable. It looks like the comics come to life, with bright colors! But… is it really just the same story a third time?

There is little to no plot in the teaser, or in Netflix’s post about the teaser, but it looks like the same story. One can certainly hope that in this new form, the story of Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera), Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and their friends and evil exes might get expanded just a little bit. There’s certainly more to delve into on the pages of O’Malley’s books.

But plot questions aside, this looks just right and extremely fun. The animation is courtesy of Science SARU, and the jams come from from Anamanaguchi (who provided music for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game) and Joseph Trapanese. And then, of course, there’s that voice cast, which includes (deep breath):
