The illustrated posters for films from King Kong to The Goonies are undeniably iconic, and seem to belong to a lost era. “When I was a kid, the first connection you would have with a movie was seeing the poster,” Joe Dante says in the trailer for 24×36—a new documentary directed by Kevin Burke that focuses on the decline of commercial illustrated movie posters—themselves works of art—and their resurgence thanks to fans armed both with love of the style and incredible, untapped talent.
The documentary also features artists like Richard Kastel, who created the unforgettable posters for Jaws and The Empire Strikes Back, as well as interviews with gallery owners who have created exhibitions around both honoring the original art and highlighting new interpretations.
