It looks like Trekkies who want a spin-off Star Trek series featuring Captain Pike, Spock and Number will get their wish. Sort of. A total of three new mini-episodes of Short Treks will focus on Captain Pike, Spock and Number One. And the new trailer features…carnivorous tribbles?
The news broke on Saturday at San Diego Comic-Con during the Star Trek: Universe panel and Alex Kurtzman even teased that a spin-off series focused on the USS Enterprise with Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Rebecca Romijn could happen actually happen. Reportedly, Kurtzman said, “Do you want Captain Pike, Spock and Number One getting their own show?” The crowd freaked out in the affirmative.
Alex Kurtzman: Do you want Captain Pike, Spock and No.1 getting their own show?
Crowd: YES!— TrekCore.com 🖖 (@TrekCore) July 20, 2019
In addition to the classic-era Short Treks, other episodes of the short anthology series will feature two animated shorts and one short that introduces the events of Star Trek: Picard. So, that brings the total number of new Short Treks forthcoming to six, which is two more than the last “season” of the min-anthology show.
UPDATE: Here’s the trailer!
From the footage in the trailer, it appears what we’re seeing is scenes from only the three Pike-era shorts. And the biggest revelation is that the episode about Spock and Number is actually about Spock’s first days aboard the USS Enterprise. Number One calls him “ensign” and he is clearly new to the ship. It’s very unclear if any of these shorts happen after the Enterprise and the Discovery part ways in the season 2 Discovery finale “Such Sweet Sorrow.”
Also, the tribbles episode also features carnivorous tribbles and may or may not be entirely set on the Enterprise. Which is weird.
All the Short Treks are expected to air this year on CBS All-Acces. Here are the titles.
“Ask Not,” “Q&A,” “The Trouble with Edward,” “The Girl Who Made the Stars,” “Ephaim and Dot” and “Children of Mars.”
