We’ve already detailed why Robin is integral to the semi-rebooted Batman story in Zack Snyder’s new superhero mashup film, and now there’s a chance that the filmmakers feel the same. A local news report from the Batman v Superman set is claiming that The Hunger Games actress Jena Malone is joining the film… as Carrie Kelley, a.k.a. Robin!
Hat-tip to The Daily Dot for picking up the news report from Michigan’s local station WILX-10, who got the alleged scoop from an extra on the set while they were filming at Michigan State University. The newscaster claims that Malone has been cast in the film, and that she’ll be playing Robin.
Malone was indeed spotted on the set in August, though at the time it seemed that she was just visiting Snyder, who directed her in Sucker Punch. However, the actress herself recently debuted bright-red (some might say Carrie Kelley-esque) hair on Instagram, with the enigmatic caption “Drastic times call for drastic measures”:
Malone dropped similar hints on social media while auditioning to play Johanna Mason in Catching Fire a few years ago.
Snyder has hinted that he and David S. Goyer will draw from Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns for the Batman v Superman screenplay. It would match up well with Ben Affleck’s Batman being middle-aged and placed in opposition to Superman. Though as Cinema Blend points out, the film would be well served to mention the many Robins who came before Carrie Kelley.
No confirmation from Warner Bros yet.
