Pan Macmillan has acquired the UK rights to Sorcerer to the Crown, the start of a new trilogy from debut author Zen Cho.

Pan Macmillan’s Senior Commissioning editor Bella Pagan is excited for the trilogy, saying “Sorcerer to the Crown is warm, clever and witty. I just adored the characters, their dilemmas and the lively world Zen Cho has created. It’s very special and I just can’t wait to share this wonderful book with as many readers as possible.”

The book takes us to a Regency London where the Crown calls on magic, and English high society holds an uneasy truce with the land of the Faerie. Even though Zacharias Wythe has only begun his work as England’s first African Sorcerer Royal, he’s is already facing three non-magical problems: The Fairy court thinks he murdered his predecessor, a dangerous faction is scheming to unseat him by any means necessary, and…Prunella Gentleman. Prunella, an orphan who has spent her life toiling at a school she hates, has just uncovered a secret that might change the course of English Magic. Wythe doesn’t want to work with her, but it looks like he doesn’t have a choice…

Malaysian author Zen Cho, an emerging writer who was recently a finalist for the John W. Campbell Award for Best New Writer spoke enthusiastically about launching her trilogy: “I’m delighted that the book has found such a wonderful home in the UK. It’s a great honour to join Pan Macmillan’s fantastic list, and I know they will do a fabulous job of orchestrating Zacharias and Prunella’s debut in society!” Temeraire author Naomi Novik calls the new book “an enchanting cross between Georgette Heyer and Susanna Clarke, full of delights and surprises.” Look for Sorceror to the Crown in Autumn 2015 from Pan Macmillan in the UK and Penguin Random House in the U.S.
