CBS has released two photos of Supergirl star Melissa Benoist proudly showing off her “S” (or is that “hope”?) in-costume as Kara Zor-El. And why shouldn’t she be proud? When the series starts, 24-year-old Kara will finally embrace the superpowers she has long hidden from her friends and family.
As you can see, her costume has the same dark palette seen in Man of Steel and promos for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But there’s also the influence of Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood (Alice in Wonderland, Into the Woods), who designs the superhero duds on The CW’s Arrow and The Flash.
“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” Atwood said. You can see some of that in the full-body shot:
Supergirl seems likely to premiere in 2015, though CBS has not yet announced a date.
