We have a Shadow! The much-anticipated TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s American Gods has cast The 100‘s Ricky Whittle in the lead role of Shadow Moon. American Gods‘ showrunners Bryan Fuller and Michael Green have been searching for a Shadow for months now, saying, “We searched every continent and country and all the islands in between for our Shadow Moon, and we are lucky to have found Ricky. Fans of the novel will find he has every bit of the heart of the character they fell in love with.”
American Gods, which was Gaiman’s debut as a solo novelist, follows an ex-con named Shadow who ends up reluctantly working with an elderly con artist named Wednesday. Shadow gradually becomes aware that the world, and Wednesday, are much more than they seem, as he is dragged into a war between ancient gods who are fighting to survive in America, and the newly ascendant gods of money, technology, media, and celebrity.
Gaiman also weighed in on the casting, saying “I’m thrilled that Ricky has been cast as Shadow. His auditions were remarkable. The process of taking a world out of the pages of a book, and putting it onto the screen has begun. American Gods is, at its heart, a book about immigrants, and it seems perfectly appropriate that Shadow will, like so much else, be Coming to America. I’m delighted Ricky will get to embody Shadow. Now the fun starts.”
This is so exciting! What does everyone think of the casting so far? Who are your favorite picks for Wednesday and Sam?
