Fun news just in time for the Fourth of July: Turns out the leader of the free world on The CW’s Supergirl is a woman! Lynda Carter, a.k.a. Wonder Woman, is the show’s latest bit of cheeky casting as the President of the United States. Variety reports that Carter (who the executive producers had been trying to nab for quite some time) has signed on for a recurring role in the second season.
This isn’t the first time Carter has popped back into the DC television universe: She appeared in a 2007 Smallville episode as Moira Sullivan, Chloe Sullivan’s mind-controlling mother. Hopefully her role as the President will be more benevolent; it also means that Supergirl‘s narrative will likely expand beyond National City, which is no surprise considering that Kara Danvers helped avert Non and Indigo’s mind-control takeover of Earth last season.
Part of me would have liked to see Carter reprise her role as an older Wonder Woman, especially since we’re finally getting Superman this season. But the show likes to be creative with its casting of familiar faces in new roles, including Dean Cain (Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman) as Jeremiah Danvers, Helen Slater (Supergirl) as Eliza Danvers, and Laura Vandervoort (Smallville) as Indigo. And to see Kara interact with another potential mentor figure aside from Cat Grant is an excellent choice for the show. Still, it’d be kind of awesome if Kara flew to the White House only to meet President… Prince.
Supergirl season 2 premieres October 10 at 8 p.m. EST.
