The first trailer for Netflix’s Shadow and Bone introduced us to an epic fantasy world full of intrigue, darkness, and a vague mystery surrounding Alina Starkov (Jessie Mei Li), a young woman with the power of light in her veins. But the second trailer is here to up the stakes, spelling out exactly what Alina is—and how the characters from Leigh Bardugo’s Six of Crows duology are connected to her story.
They’re after the bounty on her head.
Shadow and Bone is based on Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone trilogy and Six of Crows duology, and one of the biggest mysteries about the adaptation has been how the two series would combine into one narrative. This trailer makes it clear that once Alina is revealed to be a Sun Summoner, a legendary magic-wielder, everyone wants to get their hands on her powers. “Our enemies are threatened by your mere existence,” General Kirigan (Ben Barnes) tells her. “The whole world will be after you,” says Mal Oretsev (Archie Renaux), Alina’s childhood friend.
“The prize,” says a gray-haired gentleman, “is one million kruge.” The Six of Crows characters—Amita Suman’s Inej, Kit Young’s Jesper Fahey, and Freddy Carter’s Kaz Brekker—are the first people we see leap into action.
But Kirigan’s plans for Alina are much bigger: using their combined powers to destroy the Shadow Fold, the monster-filled darkness that surrounds their land. And the end of this trailer is all about hinting that Alina has an even larger role to play. (The giant stag likes her! You know someone’s a major hero when mythical animals like them.)
The eight episodes of Shadow and Bone land on Netflix on April 23rd. If the trailer wasn’t enough, showrunner Eric Heisserer is sharing a few bonus images on Twitter.
