Netflix has finally announced when fans can return to Hawkins—and when the Stranger Things journey ends. In a letter to fans, creators Matt and Ross Duffer explained that season 4 will arrive in two volumes: Volume 1 on May 27, and Volume 2 on July 1.

“With nine scripts, over eight-hundred pages, almost two years of filming, thousands of visual effects shots and a runtime nearly twice the length of any previous season, Stranger Things 4 was the most challenging season yet, but also the most rewarding one,” they wrote.

It’s also the beginning of the end, as Netflix announced that the series will end with season 5. Except maybe not entirely.

The Duffers hinted that while their breakout series now has an end date, it may not mean the end of stories told in this world: “There are still many more exciting stories to tell within the world of Stranger Things: new mysteries, new adventures, new unexpected heroes.” What that means in terms of potential spinoffs remains to be seen, but given what a huge hit the series has been for Netflix, it wouldn’t be surprising if they tried to create a Hawkinsverse.

The summary for season 4 says:

It’s been six months since the Battle of Starcourt, which brought terror and destruction to Hawkins. Struggling with the aftermath, our group of friends are separated for the first time – and navigating the complexities of high school hasn’t made things any easier. In this most vulnerable time, a new and horrifying supernatural threat surfaces, presenting a gruesome mystery that, if solved, might finally put an end to the horrors of the Upside Down.

Stranger Things returns to Netflix on May 27th.
