Rick Riordan (pictured above) is the prolific author behind numerous book series including Percy Jackson and the Olympians, The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase and the Gods of Asgard, The Trials of Apollo, and The Heroes of Olympus. There’s clearly a theme to these novels, and that theme is ancient mythologies serving as the inspiration for engaging stories that are much-loved by millions of kids (and grown-ups).
It turns out that Riordan has a new tranche of mythology he wants to explore. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter about his upcoming Percy Jackson series, Riordan also shared that he might dabble in Irish mythology in a future book.
“I recently finished a master’s degree with University College Cork in Ireland, in Gaelic literature,” he said. “One of the reasons for that was I was prepping to explore my own ancestral background and the language in the myths. I’ve been doing a lot of background research on that. The first thing I published on that was my own take on Finn McCool, the great Irish hero. I wrote his origin story, basically, in an anthology, The Cursed Carnival, that came out last year. But yes, there are a lot of ideas percolating in the background.”
Finn McCool! I admit I know very little about Gaelic literature, but any story featuring a guy named Finn McCool sounds pretty great. While we will likely have to wait awhile for a new book from Riordan inspired by similar tales, we do know that we’ll soon see Percy Jackson and the Olympians on Disney+ at some point in the near future, given the first season is now in post-production.
