At the end of Ms. Marvel, some weird shenanigans happened—a switcheroo that clearly led directly into this fall’s The Marvels. In the first trailer for the big team-up, we discovered that all three Marvels—Carol Danvers (Brie Larson), Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani), and Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris)—were running into swapsies trouble whenever they used their powers.
This new trailer makes it clear why that’s happening, which seems like an odd thing to reveal months out from the movie’s November release. But there’s gotta be more to the plot than just another fancy bracelet and a woman with a need for vengeance.
Our heroic Captain Marvel isn’t heroic to everyone, and least of all to Kree leader Dar-Ben (Zawe Ashton) who refers to her as “the annihilator” and says, “You took everything from me.” The Kree haven’t exactly been great with humanity, either, but Dar-Ben obviously has a specific issue in mind.
Here’s the synopsis:
Carol Danvers aka Captain Marvel has reclaimed her identity from the tyrannical Kree and taken revenge on the Supreme Intelligence. But unintended consequences see Carol shouldering the burden of a destabilized universe. When her duties send her to an anomalous wormhole linked to a Kree revolutionary, her powers become entangled with that of Jersey City super-fan, Kamala Khan aka Ms. Marvel, and Carol’s estranged niece, now S.A.B.E.R. astronaut Captain Monica Rambeau. Together, this unlikely trio must team-up and learn to work in concert to save the universe as The Marvels.
Wild how this synopsis doesn’t even mention the small army of kittens cute little flerken floating around in that one scene. Is Goose a star in this movie or not? (I kid—but it is wild that Marvel dropped this trailer at midnight last night, which is not generally when you drop a trailer you want people to see.)
The Marvels is written by Megan McDonnell, Nia DaCosta, Elissa Karasik, and Zeb Wells, and directed by DaCosta. Intergalactic conflict comes to theaters on November 10th.
