This piece was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the film being covered here wouldn’t exist.

Who knew a mason jar could be so terrifying? The second trailer for It Lives Inside will make me never look at the convenient storage vessel in the same way again.

The clip gives us additional glimpses of what horrible things the demonic Pishach can do when it decides to come out of said mason jar. It also reveals that our high school protagonist, Sam (Megan Suri), gets help from her mother to learn how to vanquish the Pishach—a demon of pure evil found in Hindu and Buddhist mythologies—that has possessed her friend.

It Lives Inside initially emerged as an image: a kid on a bike, riding through Rockwellian suburbs,” writer-director Bishal Dutta said in a statement. “It’s right out of an early Amblin film. But what if this kid was escaping a puja, her school outfit wrapped in an ornate dupatta? For me, that image spoke to the duality I felt growing up as a first-generation immigrant in America. ‘Where do I belong? Which country is my home? Which world is ultimately mine?’”

In addition to Suri, It Lives Inside stars Neeru Bajwa, Mohana Krishnan, Betty Gabriel, Vik Sahhay, Gage Marsh, and Jenaya Ross as the formidable Pishach. It’s produced by Get Out alums Raymond Mansfield and Sean McKittrick.

The Neon film premieres in theaters on September 22, 2023. In the meantime, check out this new, kickass poster:
