Surprising no one, the powers that be behind the epic George R.R. Martin small-screen universe would like their universe to go on—and to get bigger. The Hollywood Reporter has the news that Warner Bros. is “quietly developing at least one film set in George R.R. Martin’s epic fantasy universe.”
As THR mentions, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss wanted to finish off their epic television series with three movies rather than the final season (perhaps things would have made a bit more sense if they’d gotten to take that route, but we’ll never know). Martin has said, in the past, that movie ideas were being discussed. But, as THR notes, “HBO strongly resisted the idea and instead wanted to preserve the prestige series as an HBO property.”
But with new executives at Warner Bros. and HBO—and a whole host of TV/movie crossovers, including The Batman and The Penguin, and Dune and Dune: Prophecy—the situation has apparently changed.
A remarkable number of Game of Thrones spinoffs have already been considered and cast aside, including a prequel starring Naomi Watts that got so far as to shoot a pilot episode before being canceled. House of the Dragon (pictured above) and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are the only two to make it to the screen so far; we’re between HotD seasons, and Knight premieres next year. The fact that Martin still has not finished the book series certainly isn’t going to stop anyone from telling more stories in his world; perhaps the open door at the end of so many characters’ fates might even be a boon to filmmakers.
Absolutely no one is attached to the Game of Thrones movie—yet.
