Though James Franco will not be returning for the Rise of the Planet of the Apes sequel—Dawn of the Planet of the Apes—news has just broken that Gary Oldman will star in the film as the leader of a human colony. Reportedly, Oldman’s character will be part of a group of scientists, struggling to stay alive after a plague has killed most humans. Presumably, he’ll also be fighting against Ceasar (Andy Serkis) and his fellow apes, who in the 15 years following the first film, are most likely in charge. Oldman will join a a cast already populated by Jason Clarke and Kodi Smit-McPhee. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes will be directed by Matt Reeves, and penned by Rise screenwriters Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, as well as Mark Bomback and Scott Burns. Filming will begin in May with a expected release date in May 2014.
