A My Little Pony movie that was set to open in theaters in September is now bypassing the big screen entirely: Variety reports the ponies will make their candy-colored way straight to Netflix instead.
Not a lot is known about the film. The beloved series My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic came to an end in 2019, and according to the children’s entertainment industry site Kidscreen, this Pony movie will introduce all new characters (including “an activist working to make the pony world a better place”) and a new, CGI-animated look.
The My Little Pony brand has been around since the early ’80s and been through many swings in popularity, from its ubiquitousness in the ’80s to a lull in the mid ’90s. Friendship is Magic marked the fourth overhaul of the pony look and franchise, and kept trotting for nine seasons, a feature film (pictured above), and two spinoffs, including last year’s My Little Pony: Pony Life.
Variety reports that Robb Cullen (the writer of Cop Out), Jose Ucha (Invizimals), and Mark Fattibene (a visual effects supervisor) directed the upcoming movie. No voice cast has been announced, and the release date is also unknown, but the movie is expected to appear on Netflix at some point this year.
