As if the Idle Hands remake wasn’t enough. The next ’90s teen horror film headed for remake land is The Faculty, which starred Jon Stewart and a passel of teens (including Josh Hartnett, Jordana Brewster, Elijah Wood, Usher, and Clea DuVall) in a story about aliens invading via poorly behaving high school teachers. Somehow I feel like I remember every beat of this film despite having only seen it once, but hey! Now we can see it again, in a new version from writer Drew Hancock (Companion) and produced by Robert Rodriguez, who directed the original.
The adult cast in the original film was excellent, and I hope they can do as well this time around. Along with Stewart, it starred Salma Hayek, Piper Laurie, Famke Janssen, Bebe Neuwirth, and Robert Patrick.
The movie’s story came from David Wechter and Bruce Kimmel, and the screenplay was written by very-hot-at-the-time Kevin Williamson, the creator of Dawson’s Creek who originally burst onto the teen and/or horror scene by writing Scream. It was not nearly as popular as Scream, but has garnered something of a cult following over the years.
Variety‘s report on the remake doesn’t mention a director, which is interesting. It remains to be seen who will take the reins here, but I have one request: Cast Jon Stewart again. New teacher, same face. Bring him back. We deserve this.
