In October, aliens invade. Again. Apple TV+’s Invasion comes from executive producers Simon Kinberg and David Weil, who between them have been involved in X-Men, Star Wars Rebels, and The Twilight Zone. And as the full trailer makes clear, their aliens are dreaming big: this invasion is worldwide.
In an interview with IGN, Kinberg says, “Initially I had a thought of doing a very modern global Babel, like the movie Babel meets War of the Worlds.” He goes on to explain that as he worked with Weil, the idea got further from War of the Worlds, but the glimpses of the aliens we see in the trailer certainly seem to reference that famous H.G. Wells tale.
Invasion’s international characters include a sheriff (Sam Neill) who is (naturally) on the verge of retirement when aliens invade; a soldier (Shamier Anderson) stationed in Afghanistan and apparently having repeated encounters with the aliens; first-generation Syrian immigrants played by Golshifteh Farahani and Firas Nassar; and a woman (Shioli Kutsuna) who works for Japan’s space program and seems to have figured out something key about our new alien neighbors.
Apple’s marketing copy invites you to “feel what it’s like to live through an alien invasion” starting October 22nd. As is becoming more common, the first three episodes will be available at the premiere, with the rest of the ten-episode season airing weekly.
