Earlier this year, The CW handed out a second season order for its superhero show Batwoman, only to have its star, Ruby Rose abruptly drop out months later. The network quickly found a replacement: Javicia Leslie, and promised that this wouldn’t be a run-of-the-mill recasting: the disappearance of Rose’s version of the character would play a prominent role in the next season.
Judging from the first full trailer for season two, that looks to be the case.
The show’s first season left off anticipating that Rose would return to the role in the next season, but as season 2 opens, it looks as though Kate Kane will be missing fromt he streets of Gotham—her friends are distraught, and Leslie’s character, Ryan Wilder, discovers her Batsuit.
While Kate’s former allies hope that she’ll return, they realize that Gotham still needs Batwoman—even if it’s a different Batwoman. Ryan jumps into the role, suiting up and taking her fight against crime to the streets, and has to figure out all the rules along the way—no killing, for example.
We’ll find out how Ryan finds herself in the role and what the mystery behind Kate’s disappearance is when the show returns on January 17th, 2021.
