According to Deadline, the six-episode limited series is described as a thriller and takes place in 1980s New York City. Cumberbatch will be playing Vincent Anderson, a puppeteer on a popular kids show whose young son goes missing. Vincent, overwhelmed by grief, finds comfort by talking to Eric, the monster who lives under his child’s bed. The project comes to us from the production company Sister (who also backed Chernobyl) and was written by Abi Morgan (The Split).
“Eric is a dark and crazy journey into the heart of 1980’s New York, and the good bad and ugly world of Vincent,” Morgan said in a statement to Deadline. “The chance to work with Benedict and the creative team at Sister and Netflix, is irresistible.”
Netflix U.K. greenlit Eric back in November 2021 and will be shot in the U.K., even though it’s set in Manhattan. In addition to Cumberbatch, Eric will star Gaby Hoffman (Field of Dreams), McKinley Belcher II (Ozark, The Passage), Dan Fogler (Fantastic Beasts, The Walking Dead), and Phoebe Nicholls (The Elephant Man). Other cast members include Clarke Peters, Ivan Morris Howe, David Denman, Bamar Kane, Adepero Odyue, Alexis Molnar, and Roberta Colindrez.
No news yet on when Eric will make its way to Netflix.
