Every lonely man deserves a robot friend whose tummy is a washing machine. That’s the premise of the Focus Features trailer for Brian and Charles, at least.

Brian and Charles unsurprisingly centers on an inventor named Brian (David Earl) who lives in the Welsh countryside. Like every good inventor, he has an “inventions pantry” (aka a cow shed) where he buildings things like an egg belt, a pinecone purse, and a robot named Charles (Chris Hayward). The feature-length film directed by Jim Archer is apparently an expansion on a 2017 eponymous short he directed.

Here’s the movie’s official synopsis:

Brian and Charles follows Brian, a lonely inventor in rural Wales, who spends his days building quirky, unconventional contraptions that seldom work. Undeterred by his lack of success, Brian attempts his biggest project yet. Three days, a washing machine, and various spare parts later, he’s invented Charles, an artificially intelligent robot who learns English from a dictionary and has an obsession with cabbages. What follows is a humorous and entirely heartwarming story about loneliness, friendship, family, finding love, and letting go.

If the movie is anything like the trailer, it looks weird and funny and sweet. I love all these things, and I think I love Charles? I also can’t wait to check this one out when it premieres in theaters on June 17, 2022.
