Another Webtoon will be getting a film adaptation. This time around it will be Death of a Popstar by Violet Karim, which has 33 million global views to date.

Here’s the synopsis, per Variety, which broke the news:

Death of a Pop Star will bring to life the supernatural story of Sophie, a beloved pop star at the top of her game — until she takes a tumble from the top of the stairs and wakes up in Hell.

Lucky for her, the Grim Reaper is her number one fan and, in a desperate attempt to save his idol, secretly gives Sophie a second chance at life back on Earth. But with Sophie’s resurrection comes a deadly target on her back when she’s threatened with being dragged back to Hell.

Diablo Cody, whose credits include Juno, Jennifer’s Body and the recent film, Lisa Frankenstein, is set to produce the movie along with her regular collaborator, Mason Novick. The script will come from Isa Mazzei, who also penned How to Blow Up a Pipeline. They are teaming up with Wattpad Webtoon Studios, where Aron Levitz, David Madden and Jason Goldberg will be executive producing.

Death of a Pop Star is one of those titles that just lends itself so perfectly to a live-action adaptation,” Wattpad Webtoon Studios president Levitz said in a statement to Variety. “Violet created such a mesmerizing, must-read story, and when it came to choosing a partner to help us bridge the gap between the living and the dead, who else does that better than Diablo Cody?”

Cody added, “As a huge fan of both pop music and the undead, I am so excited to help bring this offbeat story to the screen.”

No news yet on when the project will go into production, much less when it will make its way to a screen near you. icon-paragraph-end
