It’s fitting that Disney timed the latest TV spot for Moana to the Olympics, since it features all manner of trials including terrifying little coconuts wielding swords and an unbeatable lava monster. And of course there’s Moana herself, whose affinity for the water—watch how it returns her to demigod Maui no matter how he tries to get rid of her—rivals that of any Olympic swimmer.
Just as the last trailer did a tight focus on the sea and how it shapes itself around little Moana, now we get a glimpse of what she does as an explorer, according to the Lin-Manuel Miranda-penned song “We Are the Way” that’s buoyed up every trailer so far. Watch for yourself!
Disney also shared the film’s synopsis:
Three thousand years ago, the greatest sailors in the world voyaged across the vast Pacific, discovering the many islands of Oceania. But then, for a millennium, their voyages stopped—and no one knows why. From Walt Disney Animation Studios comes Moana, a sweeping, CG-animated feature film about an adventurous teenager who sails out on a daring mission to save her people. During her journey, Moana (voice of Auli’i Cravalho) meets the mighty demigod Maui (voice of Dwayne Johnson), who guides her in her quest to become a master wayfinder. Together, they sail across the open ocean on an action-packed voyage, encountering enormous monsters and impossible odds, and along the way, Moana fulfills the ancient quest of her ancestors and discovers the one thing she’s always sought: her own identity.
Moana comes to theaters this Thanksgiving, November 23.
