I haven’t seen The Blackening yet, but I know a couple of folks who have, and they say it’s a must-see. Based on the final trailer for the film released today, it looks like my two friends are far from the only ones having a great night at the theater seeing this horror comedy.

While we’ve seen some of the footage in this new trailer before, this one has some new stuff and it also has scenes from the film interspersed with audience reactions to the movie. The feature centers on a group of Black folks in a haunted cabin forced to play a game called The Blackening by a serial killer (a game one character says must run on racism). The killer, unsurprisingly, wants to kill them, and the group fights back and bends the horror genre while doing so.

It’s unsurprising that the shots of the audience (caught in green-lit night-vision cameras) in a trailer promoting the film are all positive, but sometimes marketing tells us the truth! This film looks like a great night at the movies, and I, for one, can’t wait to see it.

The Blackening comes from director Tim Story (Ride Along, Think Like A Man, Barbershop) and screenplay and screen story by Tracy Oliver (Girls Trip, Harlem) & Dewayne Perkins (The Amber Ruffin Show, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). It stars Melvin Gregg as King, Grace Byers as Allison, Antoinette Robertson as Lisa, Sinqua Walls as Nnamdi, Jermaine Fowler as Clifton, Dewayne Perkins as Dewayne, and Xochitl Mayo as Shanika.

It premieres Junteenth weekend, on June 16, 2023.
