So many beloved genre TV series are being rebooted right now: Twin Peaks, The X-Files, and now Galaxy Quest! That is, the fictional TV show Galaxy Quest and the wonderfully meta 1999 movie about it, which spoofed Star Trek and fandom and revivals all over the place.
According to Variety, Paramount Television is working with Robert Gordon, who co-wrote the movie, and director Dean Parisot to bring Galaxy Quest in all of its layers to the small screen.
It’s unclear if the idea for the series is to have it be a weekly show-within-a-show where we get to watch the squabbling cast shoot their soon-to-be-classic series, or if the TV show will follow the movie—that is, with the washed-up actors getting contacted by aliens who believe that Galaxy Quest is real. Maybe both?
Either way, there is so much juicy meta commentary to be had here, especially since we’ve seen lots of beloved cult series (some of which have been rebooted) since the movie’s release.
With the movie being 16 years old (almost as much time elapses between the cancellation of Galaxy Quest and the events of the movie), it’s likely that the studio will go full reboot. So, who should they cast? The Toast already has some great ideas.
By Grabthar’s hammer, by the suns of Warvan, you shall be rebooted!
