If you’re of a certain age, you likely remember an after-school animated series about a bunch of gargoyles in New York City who come to life to protect its denizens. I am of that age, though haven’t seen the show, appropriately called Gargoyles, since it aired in the mid-‘90s. I definitely thought and think, however, that it rocked (pun intended, sorry).
Apparently, I’m not the only one who thinks so! The folks who brought us the Annabelle films—Gary Dauberman and James Wan—are now bringing us a live-action reimagining of the series for Disney Branded Television.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the news that Dauberman will write, executive produce, and showrun the series with Atomic Monster, the production company helmed by Wan and Michael Clear. In addition to the Annabelle films, Dauberman’s writing credits include The Nun, The Nun II, both recent It films, and the upcoming adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot. He also had his directorial debut with Annabelle Comes Home.
The original Gargoyles was created by Greg Weisman and was on the air when animated shows just started getting a bit darker in tone. It also featured a stellar voice cast, which included Keith David, Salli Richardson-Whitfield, Jeff Bennett, Frank Welker, Ed Asner, Jonathan Frakes, and Marina Sirtis.
This project isn’t the first time a Gargoyles reboot has gotten off the ground. A little over a decade ago, Disney considered making a feature film about the stony characters, but that effort fizzled out. There also appears to be a live-action feature film currently in the works, with The Belfast Telegraph reporting in July 2023 that Kenneth Branagh would direct, though there’s been no confirmation of that from Disney or another outlet.
The live-action television show, however, appears to be going full steam ahead. No news yet, however, on when we’ll see the series on the small screen
