Grady Hendrix’s latest novel The Final Girl Support Group hit bookstore shelves earlier this week, and it looks like it’ll be headed to HBO Max next. Deadline reports that the streaming service is developing an adaptation of the book with Charlize Theron, and Barbara and Andy Muschietti.
The book is a sendup of the classic tropes of 1980s slasher films, following Lynnette Tarkington, a woman who survived the Silent Night Slayings in 1988, and who meets with a group of other women who were the sole survivors of other killing sprees. When one of her fellow group members misses a meeting, Lynette begins to realize that someone’s trying to orchestrate one last bloody finale, and has to take things into her own hands once again.
Deadline notes that HBO Max is setting this project up as a TV series, and has tapped Andy Muschietti (the director of It, It: Chapter Two, and The Flash) to helm the pilot. Theron will act as an executive producer through her production company, Denver & Delilah Films, while the Muschiettis will do the same from their company, Double Dream. Hendrix will also act as EP for the project.
This isn’t the only project that Hendrix has in the works: his 2014 book Horrorstör is being adapted by New Republic Pictures, while Amazon is developing a series based on his novel The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires.
