The Hellboy franchise lives on, as creator Mike Mignola announced on Facebook last night that a new Hellboy movie is happening. But it won’t be directed by Guillermo del Toro, who brought the demonic comic book hero to the big screen twice, with 2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army. A few months ago, del Toro took to Twitter to announce that Hellboy 3 was officially not happening. Instead, this will be a reboot—an R-rated one, at that—and Neil Marshall, who directed the acclaimed indie horror thriller The Descent, will take the helm. And replacing Ron Perlman, who played the red-faced demon in the first two movies, is Stranger Things’ David Harbour.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project’s working title is Hellboy: Rise of the Blood Queen. There’s a screenplay, co-written by Andrew Cosby, Christopher Golden, and Mignola. Marshall is also developing the script with Aron Coleite, who has worked on NBC’s Heroes and CBS’ Star Trek: Discovery; he and his partner Marc Helwig will also serve as producers.
Harbour, best known for playing Police Chief Jim Hopper on Netflix’s nostalgia-heavy series (which is returning for a second season), confirmed the news by posting a cheeky tweet last night:
