James Marsters will once again be the voice of Harry Dresden. As noticed by some eagle-eyed Redditors and Livejournal users, the actor has confirmed in a video interview at Fandemic Tour with Bayou City Geeks (skip to 14:24) that he will be narrating the audiobook edition of the hotly anticipated next book in Jim Butcher’s The Dresden Files series. Marsters has narrated all previous Dresden Files audiobooks.

Back in July 2019, Butcher announced via Twitter that he’d completed the draft for the next book in the series:

The author elaborated in a blog post on his website that the manuscript for the book, entitled Peace Talks, had been passed on to beta readers and his editors at Ace/Roc. No word yet on a publication date, but if all goes well, then a landing date somewhere in the middle or back half of 2020 would not be unexpected.

In the meantime, a new story set in the Dresdenverse, told from the perspective of Goodman Grey, can be found in the anthology Parallel Worlds: The Heroes Within, edited by L.J.Hachmeister and R.R. Virdi.

How does one become a beta reader? What are the requirements? Can’t wait for the book to hit the shelves!

@1 the is a waiting list.  I believe Jim has commented on it during some of his q&a sessions.  There are around 8. They have all done it for years, most since real early in the series. If anyone can’t anymore they call up someone else on the list. I Believe Priscilla runs it.

Brian, James Marsters read a release of Ghost Story. You pretty much can’t buy the original any more.

@3,4

I had purchased the old one from Audible. They updated it to the Marster’s version automatically for me once it was released. DIdn’t have to ask or re-buy it.

This book has been on hold so long I’ll believe it exists when I see it on the shelves.

@6:

He announced the final revision was done yesterday. So it’s on to the publisher for copyediting. It’s definitely coming.

and thank Mab he did. The original audiobook recording was absolutely unbearable. Not to take anything away from the narrator, I’m sure he is good in other works but James IS Harry Dresden.

 @8 I head cannon the other reader as an distortion of Dresden voice because hes a spirit. I know it’s weird, but love the series enough to endure. Nice to know there is a masters done one though. Really got to look into that.

I love Marsters, but I’m going to say something heretical. I enjoyed John Glover’s rendition more. When Marsters didnt do Ghost Story, I raged like everyone else, but I told myself in my head, since Dresden is (spoiler), he sounds different. More like an old time gumshoe. I began to appreciate Glover. When Marsters re-recorded it, I was so used to Glover’s inflections, I actually disliked parts of it James Marsters version ( Though I thank him for doing it, he didnt have to).

I think John Glover does a better Mortimer Lindquist. There , I said it.

That being said. we have to keep James healthy to voice the last 6 or 7 novels. I’ve never actually read a Dresden Novel, but when I read the short stories, its James voice in my head.
