There’s a horror-comedy set in the ‘80s coming our way next year, courtesy of Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body, Juno), that is loosely (very loosely, as the trailer released today reveals) based on Mary Shelly’s Frankenstein.
The film, set in 1989, centers on a teenaged Lisa (Kathryn Newton from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania) who stumbles across a sexy corpse (Riverdale alum Cole Sprouse) that she reanimates via a tanning booth in her garage.
Here’s the synopsis:
A coming of RAGE love story from acclaimed writer Diablo Cody (Jennifer’s Body) about a misunderstood teenager and her high school crush, who happens to be a handsome corpse. After a set of playfully horrific circumstances bring him back to life, the two embark on a murderous journey to find love, happiness… and a few missing body parts along the way.
As the trailer reveals, there is at least one dead body besides Sprouse’s in the film, and that body may or may not have met its end via an axe that both Lisa and the Corpse wield at various moments in the clip. High school love! There’s nothing like it!
In addition to Newton and Sprouse, Lisa Frankenstein stars Carla Gugino, Liza Soberano, Joe Chrest, and Henry Eikenberry. It’s the feature directing debut of Zelda Williams.
Lisa Frankenstein premieres in theaters on February 9, 2024, just in time for Valentine’s Day.
