It will come as no surprise to most SFF fans to find that living in an underground silo after some sort of apocalypse isn’t exactly a cakewalk. Silo, the latest series to explore this miserable existence, is based on the books by Hugh Howey (the show was formerly known as Wool, after the first book in the series).

Silo is the story of the last ten thousand people on earth, their mile-deep home protecting them from the toxic and deadly world outside. However, no one knows when or why the silo was built and any who try to find out face fatal consequences. Ferguson stars as Juliette, an engineer, who seeks answers about a loved one’s murder and tumbles onto a mystery that goes far deeper than she could have ever imagined, leading her to discover that if the lies don’t kill you, the truth will.
The cast is intriguing: Along with Rebecca Ferguson, Silo stars Common, Harriet Walter, David Oyelowo, Rashida Jones, Chinaza Uche, Avi Nash, and Tim Robbins. It’s created by Graham Yost, who also developed and served as showrunner for Justified and, quite notably, wrote the 1994 film Speed.
But everything else about this trailer seems far too familiar, from the brown palette (with contrasting bits of sterile white) to the heavy-handed dialogue: “What if everything you know to be true”—pause for dramatic imagery—”is one big lie?”
What if, indeed? You can find out for yourself when Silo premieres (with two episodes, followed by weekly episodes) on May 5th.
