Gods: They’re just like us! They too have existential crises and need to go on journeys of self-discovery! “I need to figure out exactly who I am,” Thor (Chris Hemsworth) says… before the (distractingly) recognizable riff from Guns N’ Roses “Sweet Child o’ Mine” kicks in.
Yeah, yeah, there are a lot of bright ’80s colors and a total hair metal vibe comes off Zeus (Russell Crowe) and his cheesy lightning bolt in this first teaser for Taika Waititi’s Thor: Love and Thunder, but let’s be honest: We just really wanna see Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) as Mighty Thor.
And we get her! But only for a second. There’s a lot to get through here, and not all of it good (as Sylas Barrett pointed out after Endgame, Marvel hasn’t been doing a great job with Thor’s grief and mental health—though I want to expect better things from Waititi). The good goes by all too quickly, like a clearly disgruntled King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson) grumbling through another day on the job in New Asgard.
But Thor trying valiantly to drift into Star Lord’s eyeline as Peter Quill intones platitudes about what to do when you feel lost? Very good. Very, very good.

But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher (Christian Bale), who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie (Tessa Thompson), Korg (Taika Waititi) and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster (Natalie Portman), who – to Thor’s surprise – inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.
