The Addams Family series Wednesday, starring Jenna Ortega as the titular character, is Netflix’s most-watched English-language program, ever. It’s not surprising then, that the streaming platform is eager to make more shows in that universe. And it looks like Uncle Fester, played by Fred Armisen in season one of Wednesday, is the first to be considered.
Bloomberg broke the news that execs over at Netflix are considering Wednesday spinoffs before season two of the show even goes into production (it’s currently scheduled to start filming in Ireland in April). Armisen’s Uncle Fester showed up briefly in season one, though given how the character is a fan favorite, it makes sense for Netflix to bring the character back with an actor like Armisen.
That show is still in very early development, which means that there’s a decent chance it won’t happen. I think we should be prepared for a least one or two spinoffs from Wednesday, however, even if the Uncle Fester one doesn’t make it off the ground. According to Bloomberg, the company is “eager to establish a pipeline of Addams Family programs,” and its partner Amazon, who has the rights to the franchise after their acquisition of MGM, is also on board.
We also don’t know when we’ll see the second season of the original show or what those episodes will entail. Ortega has said that the next season will lean more into horror than the teen romance we saw in the first season, but other than that, it’s a mystery. And we’ll also have to wait a bit for them—based on the production schedule, season two probably won’t come out until late 2024 or early 2025.
