Three years ago, we got stuck in a time loop with Natasha Lyonne and loved every stressful, emotional, powerful, hilarious moment of it. Russian Doll seemed like a complete thought, a rare perfect season that didn’t end too neatly or too messily. But then it turned out that the show was always meant to be three seasons, and the waiting game began.
Finally, the show Lyonne co-created with Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland is returning. And we only have to wait another month.

And Then I Woke Up
At the end of season one (yes, this is a spoiler sentence!), Lyonne’s Nadia and Charlie Barnett’s Alan broke out of the death-loop they’d both been stuck in—by helping themselves and then each other. Will the time loops return? Or is there something else afoot in Nadia’s New York City? The teaser above is brief and trippy and suggests that the subway—a portal to many things and many places, in its way—is key.
The synopsis says, “Discovering a fate even worse than endless death, this season finds Nadia and Alan delving deeper into their pasts through an unexpected time portal located in one of Manhattan’s most notorious locations. At first, they experience this as an ever-expanding, era-spanning, intergenerational adventure, but they soon discover this extraordinary event might be more than they bargained for and, together, must search for a way out.”
Greta Lee, Rebecca Henderson, and Elizabeth Ashley are returning for the second season; Annie Murphy, Carolyn Michelle Smith, and Sharlto Copley have also joined the cast.
Russian Doll‘s second season premieres April 20th on Netflix. If you haven’t watched the first season yet, now is your time. Also maybe time to rewatch it. It’s been a while. And it’s great.
