Prepare a “Come back soon” cake for Bran Stark and his loyal ally Hodor. Not because they’re getting the axe! They’re just taking a little break while Game of Thrones catches up to George R.R. Martin’s plans for the beloved duo.
Spoilers ahead for the end of season 4 and all the books.
In GoT’s season 4 finale, the Three-Eyed Raven told Bran Stark, “You will never walk again. But you will fly…” Unfortunately, it’s going to be more than a year before we see any progress on that front: Actor Kristian Nairn revealed that neither his character Hodor nor Bran will appear in the HBO series’ fifth season.
“We have a season off and we have a year’s hiatus, solely because I imagine our storyline is up to the end of the books,” he explained to Yahoo! News.
It’s no secret that the series threatens to outpace Martin’s books, but fans have been wondering whether Game of Thrones season 5 will merge the final two books or go with something in between. Since Bran features in A Dance With Dragons, the show runners might be taking two seasons to deal with the two books, or [highlight for spoilers] it could be that Bran doesn’t do much in those books except get colder and turn into a tree. [end spoilers]
No Hodor, though, and yet another Stark gone. What shall replace these stars in the Westerosi sky?
In the meantime, you can always check out Nairn’s DJ exploits with his international Rave of Thrones tour!
