All week, we’ve been waiting, convinced—perhaps beyond rationality—that Disney+ Day would bring a trailer for Obi-Wan Kenobi, arguably the most hotly anticipated of the many Star Wars spinoff series the platform has planned. (Personally I’m all in for Ahsoka, but the return of Ewan McGregor is nothing to sneeze at.)
And now we’ve got… a two-minute promo video with no actual footage from the series. There’s some nifty concept art, and McGregor truly seems delighted that he’ll get to face off with Hayden Christensen again, but this is mostly just McGregor and director Deborah Chow (The Mandalorian) saying vague things that we pretty much already knew.
But yes. The art looks cool.
For the moment, the video is only available on Disney+, but we’ll give you a breakdown: The series is set ten years after Revenge of the Sith, “where Kenobi faced his greatest defeat, the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker turned evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.”
As Chow points out, “This is quite a dark time that we’re coming into with him. Just being a Jedi—it’s not safe. There’s Jedi hunters out there.” The concept art shows a hangar full of stormtroopers, an older Obi-Wan, a busy cityscape, a shipyard—and Obi-Wan and Darth Vader, facing off in a lightsaber battle.
“We couldn’t tell the story of Obi-Wan Kenobi without addressing Anakin or Vader,” Chow says, and the video cuts to footage of McGregor doing some lightsaber training.
Obi-Wan, as McGregor notes, has one task in this era: keeping baby Luke Skywalker safe. But clearly he didn’t just hang out in a cave on Tatooine the whole time. What else happened, we’ll find out in 2022 when Obi-Wan Kenobi comes to Disney+.
