Legendary Pictures and Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro released a video message late last night announcing a confirmed release date for Pacific Rim 2!
An animated series will lead up to the sequel film, which is slated for release April 7, 2017. BuzzFeed spoke to del Toro about the plans in greater detail:
The characters I love will return. Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we’re ready to have a blast.
This is what we need right now, not some deep, political or environmental message being pushed through entertainment. No, what we need is more mindless Monster v Mech brawling action that doesn’t try to sell itself as something more lofty and pretentious.
It’s time for somebody to make an Ultraman movie.
SamuelVimes@1: I’d be surprised if Pacific Rim 2 departed from the deeper messages that were much of what made the first one worst having; isolationism and exceptionalism bad, international collaboration and co-operation good, respect and professionalism good, grandstanding and egotistical posturing bad. (For “no, seriously, this doesn’t actually work” values of “bad”.) All of which strike me as extremely positive messages to incorporate in a fun mechs-and-monsters movie, particularly a high-profile one.
*SQUEEEEEEEE
Well, there’s always a chance that a sequel will not be as horrible as the original.
@5 good thing we don’t have to worry about such things in this case :D
