In an effort to help cancer-striken science fiction author Jay Lake, a fundraiser has been set up to raise enough money for Jay to undergo genome sequencing. In order to create extra incentive, various fellow SFF writers have pledged to donate an “Act of Whimsy,” each one tied to a specific fundraising goals. These include Mary Robinette Kowal reading selections of beloved classics as phone sex, Jon Scalzi singing Bob Dylan, Cherie Priest presenting a goth/steampunk fashion show for her dog, Neil Gaiman on ukulele and more!
Though they’ve actually met their initial goal of 20,000, they are now trying for some further “stretch goals” to help cover all the additional medical expenses not covered by Jay’s insurance. Check out the website to donate and be on the lookout as the authors make good on their Acts of Whimsy (And for the record, Mary Robinette Kowal has posted her video!) It’s amazing to see what the SFF community can accomplish when they come together—thanks to all the wonderful people who have donated already, and please spread the word!
