We are thrilled to announce the 2014 edition of Some of the Best from Tor.com, an anthology of twenty-six of our favorite short stories, novelettes, and novellas, selected from the seventy-plus stories we published this year.
Of course, you can always read these—and all other—Tor.com stories for free whenever you’d like, but starting today they will be available world-wide as a single, easy to read, free mini ebook. This offer is immediately available for Kindle, B&N NOOK store, iBooks, and other online retailers.
These stories were acquired and edited for Tor.com by Ellen Datlow, Carl Engle-Laird, Liz Gorinsky, David G. Hartwell, Patrick Nielsen Hayden, Peter Joseph, Marco Palmieri, Paul Stevens, and Ann VanderMeer. Each story is accompanied by an original illustration.
Note: The free ebook download offer has expired as of January 1, 2016

Sweet! Downloaded to my Kobo library. Thanks TOR.COM!!!!
I had pre-ordered it already.
Thanks again.
Happy New Year!
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
You are the first website I check in the morning, and you always have a treasure or two to check out.
Happy New Year.
Thank you so much!! Immediately downloaded!!
Thanks again! I just picked it up for my Nook.
Is there going to be a way where you can just download the thing directly and not have to download it to a cloud reader only or require you to add a credit card and billing address or give you an error when you download or any number of other crappy things that shouldn’t be required for a $@@@@@!$! free digital download? Because I’ve tried three times from free different places and I haven’t just got a downloadable file once.
Why is this not available as a free ePub instead?
+1 ePub. I don’t want to be tracked while I read.
If you “buy” it (for $0.00) from Google Books you’ll get an option to download the epub once it’s in your “library”.
Tor is in the business of selling books, and they do that via retailers, so they want to push us to the retailers’ sites, not give away ebooks on their site. The fact that the retailers are all heavily invested in DRM and such is a separate issue…
When does this promotion end? I am not seeing these as free on the site for kindle.
@11 There’s no end date for the promotion, so it should be showing up as a free download for you. What site are you trying to download it from, so I can check out the issue? Thanks!
I’m having a problem on Kobo: I added the ebook to library but when I click download I receive a 404 error.
Thanks for offering this! Downloaded and I’ll begin to read it tonight.
Let us know what your favorites are. Some of the best from Some of the Best!
@15: Of those I’ve read, I particularly like “Combustion Hour” and “The Litany of Earth”.
@12 Amaozn.com example: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MLL6Z1E?ie=UTF8&camp=213733&creative=393177&creativeASIN=B00MLL6Z1E&linkCode=shr&tag=tkqoezjfe05-20
@17 – That’s one of the stories from this collection. That story and the rest on the list are now available for free in a collection here.
I know that I can be stupid sometimes but I can’t find the link to actually download this or any other free ebook.
So what’s going on here?
Richard
@20 The links to some retailers are in the second paragraph, and the collection should be searchable at the sites of other retailers. Thanks!
@18 – TYVM I appreciate the assist.
Not available to download from Amazon UK, boohoo.
@23 Too quick off the mark ;¬) Available now…
@23: It’s definitely in Amazon UK and all other retailers, globally. Did you do a search on the title there?
I tried looking for it at Kobo, but they told me it wasn’t available internationally. :
Wow! Thanks!
@26 Therru – It’s definitely on Kobo internationally. Can you do a search for “Some of the Best from Tor.com” there and let us know if you see it?
Actually, give this a try? http://store.kobobooks.com/se-SE/ebook/some-of-the-best-from-tor-com-2014 (That should be the link to the Kobo Sweden store, which is where I’m guessing you are.)
FYI–Tor: Kobobooks customer service is telling me the epub is not available to download.
@29 – I’ll forward this to the relevant folks so we can find out what’s going on. Thanks for your patience.
Can someone please upload the epub somewhere for the rest of US that don’t have Amazon UK/US/Kobo stores purchasing rights/accounts ?
please ! and thanks !
I’ve just tried to download it for my Nook (from Barnes & Noble) but get a message saying it’s not available outside the US.

Nook problem solved! You just have to go to
http://www.nook.com/gb

Still not available for download from Kobo (you can load it into your library if you have a Kobo, just not download it to your computer directly) – this is a general problem with more recent books from Tor and Kobo. Weirdly this site has the book
http://www.ebooks.com/1830526/some-of-the-best-from-tor-com-2014/various-authors/ but lists it as not available as well.
@34 – I’ll forward this on to the ebooks folks so we can see what’s going on.
@35: Thank you.
@35: Is there any progress on Kobo? I’m still unable to download.
@37 – I’ll check in on this again when the folks get to the office Monday. Sorry, I thought this was resolved!
By the way, the ebooks.com site I mentioned above says that all the books it sells (including the Tor books) are sold with DRM (at least according to this http://www.ebooks.com/help/book-formats/)
Oh this looked so good! But every single site I went to did NOT have it for free. Amazon, Google books, iBooks, Kobo etc are all charging for it :( Does anyone know where I can get a free copy of this, & the 2015 anthology as well. I was so excited to see them advertised here as free, then so bummed when I saw they were not.
