Paramount+ has announced that Star Trek: Prodigy, the first Trek show meant for a younger audience, will beam up for a second season. The news comes after only three episodes of the CGI-animated show’s first season have dropped on the streaming platform.
Show executive producer Heather Kadin had previously said Prodigy would come back for another season, but Paramount+ didn’t make it official until today. The announcement came along with the news that the premiere of the show holds the Paramount+ record for the top-performing premiere day of any original animated kids series.
Star Trek: Prodigy follows a motley crew of alien kids who commandeer a Federation starship, the USS Protostar. The group of outcasts run into a series of challenges and adventures and are guided by Captain Janeway herself, Kate Mulgrew, who is reprising her role in holographic form.
In addition to Mulgrew, the cast includes Brett Gray (Dal), Ella Purnell (Gwyn), Rylee Alazraqui (Rok-Tahk), Angus Imrie (Zero), Jason Mantzoukas (Jankom Pog), Dee Bradley Baker (Murf), John Noble (The Diviner), and Jimmi Simpson (Drednok).
Star Trek: Prodigy premiered on Paramount+ on October 28 with a one-hour episode. New episodes of the first half of season one will continue to roll out weekly on Thursdays through November 18. The remaining five episodes of season one’s first half will be available to stream weekly on Thursdays, starting on January 6, 2022. The ten-episode-long second half of season one will be available on Paramount+ at a later date next year, to be announced. No news yet on when season two will make its way to the streaming platform.
