Netflix’s Old Guard sequel is continuing apace, reports Deadline. The film will see Chiwetel Ejiofor, Marwan Kenzari, KiKi Layne, Luca Marinelli, Veronica Ngo, Charlize Theron, and Matthias Schoenaerts return to reprise their roles, while Victoria Mahoney (second unit director on Rise of Skywalker, and Amazon’s forthcoming adaptation of Octavia Butler’s Dawn) has been hired to direct.

The 2020 film was based on Greg Rucka’s graphic novel and follows a group of immortal soldiers who have spent centuries fighting to help people. They spend a considerable amount of effort trying to stay under the radar to hide their abilities. During the course of the film, a new soldier joins their ranks: Nile Freeman (Layne) is a soldier in Afghanistan who’s attacked, only to recover quickly from her seemingly fatal injuries. After she joins the team, they learn that a pharmaceutical company is after them to try and figure out the secret behind their abilities.

The movie was a well-rated hit for Netflix, and Rucka is returning to write the screenplay for the sequel along with David Ellison. In December 2019, he began releasing a sequel to his original graphic novel, The Old Guard: Force Multiplied, which could serve as the basis for the next film. The entire storyline was collected into a graphic novel last September.

The big change for this next installment is a changing of the guard behind the cameras: Gina Prince-Bythewood, who directed the first movie, won’t be back this time around, opting to focus on some other projects. “I have decided not to direct the sequel,” she said in a statement to Deadline, “but will stay on as a producer. I leave our franchise in good hands as my girl Vic Mahoney takes on this next chapter.”

There’s no release date set for the project at this time.
