Director André Øvredal is currently making the interview rounds promoting his upcoming Dracula film The Last Voyage of the Demeter, and in one of those conversations, he also gave an update on the sequel to the Scary Stories To Tell in The Dark film that was announced back in April 2020.
In an interview with IGN the director (Øvredal is free to interview at this time; writers and actors are the two groups currently on strike) shared that the sequel to the 2019 film is still in development.
“We have a story. We have a script,” Øvredal said. “We’ve been working on the script as late as last year and even slightly into this year. The process obviously stopped with the strike—but it’s alive, for sure. COVID and then [The Last Voyage of the Demeter] eating up two years of my life certainly put a dent in the progress.”
While we don’t have details on what that script entails, it’s a reasonable assumption that, like the first film (pictured above), the sequel is inspired by at least some of the short stories written by author Alvin Schwartz and illustrated by artist Stephen Gammell. Any other details, sadly, are unknown, including the timeline—it’s good to hear that the sequel is an ongoing concern, however, and here’s to hoping we’ll eventually see it scare its way onto the big screen.
