BUT WHERE IS LUCIUS? Sorry, sorry, I’m getting a little ahead of myself. The teaser for the second season of Our Flag Means Death is finally here, and while we get a quick look at some of the series’ new characters—and the state of the relationship between Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby) and Blackbeard (Taika Waititi)—our beloved scribe/dirty picture artiste is still missing.

But that’s hardly the only bit of trouble in pirate paradise. Here’s the very vague description, which basically just sums up season one:

Our Flag Means Death is based (very) loosely on the true adventures of 18th century would-be pirate Stede Bonnet (Rhys Darby). After trading the seemingly charmed life of a gentleman for one of a swashbuckling buccaneer, Stede became captain of the pirate ship Revenge. Struggling to earn the respect of his potentially mutinous crew, Stede’s fortunes changed after a fateful run-in with the infamous Captain Blackbeard (Taika Waititi). To their surprise, the wildly different Stede and Blackbeard found more than friendship on the high seas…they found love. Now, they have to survive it.

Season two introduces Minnie Driver’s Anne Bonny and Ruibo Qian’s Susan, both of whom are seen briefly here; so is a very intense Izzy (Con O’Neill), who seems to be taking out some of his epic frustrations on some candles. Meanwhile, Stede and Blackbeard are dealing with their separation in, uh, very different ways.

Our Flag Means Death returns to HBO Max on October 5th. Three episodes will be available on the premiere date, and two episodes arrive each week after that.

This post was written during the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the series being covered here wouldn’t exist.
