There’s a new Toxic Avenger film coming our way, provided that some distributor is brave enough to take it on. The movie has already played at Fantastic Fest, however, and director Macon Blair (I Don’t Feel at Home in This World Anymore, The Florida Project) has been interviewed about his upcoming feature, including how he made one particularly grotesque moment happen.

Before I go on, it’s here I should say that if you’re not cool with violently disgusting imagery played for laughs, you should stop reading now.
In an interview with /Film at Austin’s Fantastic Fest, Blair shared that there’s at least one moment in The Toxic Avenger that was shot by the so-called “Butt Guts Unit.” The unit’s title was apparently apt, and only came about because Legendary — the studio backing the film’s production — told Blair he could get a little bit more money to shoot some additional “fun stuff.”
One of those fun bits was to add some gory flair to a scene in a restaurant where Toxie (Peter Dinklage, pictured above) is fighting some dudes in a restaurant. As Blair explained:
“I was like, ‘I think what we should do is Toxie will take his mop and he’s going to rip this guy’s pants down.’ And one of the assistant editors on the movie, named Delaney, she just goes like, ‘He’s going to rip his guts out of his butt?’ And I was like, ‘Nope… yes.’”
That “nope… yes” spawned the Butt Guts Unit, who had one day to create, as Blair described it, “a fake butt that had a cavity in the middle that you could pull intestines out.”

No news yet on when The Toxic Avenger, including the work of the Butt Guts Unit, will make its way to a theater near you.
